Hyrwyddo Gyrfaoedd Cemeg / Promoting Chemistry Careers

Ar y ddegfed o fis Fawrth, cefais y fraint o ddylunio a chyflwyno gweithdy i ddosbarth cemeg blwyddyn un-ar-ddeg, Ysgol Bro hyddgen. Pwrpas y gweithdy oedd i ddysgu’r disgyblion am y gyrfaoedd sy’n bosib o fod wedi astudio cemeg, ar ôl gorffen TGAU. Credaf fod y sesiwn wedi bod yn llwyddiannus ac roedd y disgyblion wedi cyfrannu’n arbennig o dda. Roedd eu adborth nhw yn ystod y sesiwn, a’r data darparwyd drwy arolwg ar-lein, yn hanfodol i mi allu gyflawni fy mhrosiect blwyddyn olaf, ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd. Bydd y prosiect yn trafod dyluniad cwricwlwm cemeg cyfnod allweddol pedwar, a sut mae hynny’n effeithio diddordeb disgyblion i anelu at yrfa sy’n ymwneud â chemeg yn y dyfodol.Roedd Mrs Williams yn gwesteiwr gwych; helpodd hi i fi drefnu’r sesiwn a ddosbarthu y deunyddiau dysgu, paratoais yn gynt, i bob disgybl yn y flwyddyn. Yn ogystal, roedd hi’n fodlon iawn imi gynnal cyfweliad gyda hi, i drafod fy nhopig yn bellach a chael rhagor o wybodaeth, o berspectif athrawes y pwnc. Rwy’n gyffroes i ddychwelyd yn ôl i ddosbarth Mrs Williams ym mis Medi, i gychwyn fy nghwrs yn hyfforddi i fod yn athrawes cemeg!

 

On the tenth of March, I had the pleasure of designing and delivering a workshop to the year 11 chemistry class, in Ysgol Bro Hyddgen. The purpose of the workshop was to teach the students about the different careers involving chemistry, that would become available to them if they were to pursue the subject, post GCSEs. I believe the session was very successful and the students contributed excellently throughout. Their feedback during the session, and the information they later provided, in the online survey, has been essential for me to gather the required data for my final-year, chemistry dissertation, in Cardiff University. The project will discuss the design of the KS4 Chemistry curriculum and how it’s affecting students’ interests in pursuing a career involving chemistry. Mrs Williams was a wonderful host; she helped me to arrange the session and distribute all the pre-prepared learning materials to the entire year group. In addition, she very willingly did a recorded interview, discussing my chosen topic further and provided some brilliant responses, which will be incredibly useful as a teacher’s perspective in the write-up. I’m excited to return to Mrs Williams’ classroom in September, to begin my training in becoming a chemistry teacher!
